About

Kayaköy lies in the hills behind Fethiye, not far from Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü. The village is known for its abandoned stone houses climbing the hillside, giving the place a very distinctive atmosphere.

The area was once a Greek Orthodox village known as Levissi. After the population exchange between Greece and Türkiye in the 1920s, the village was largely abandoned, and the houses remain today as a powerful historical reminder.

This is not a polished museum where everything has been restored. Kayaköy feels more like an open, quiet village ruin with paths, churches, viewpoints and house remains. That is exactly what makes the visit feel real and atmospheric.

Kayaköy is best experienced slowly. It is not a place you should only see from a car. You get much more from the visit by walking between the houses, noticing the details and understanding why the village was left empty.

The visit can be short and simple, but it can also become a fuller day if you combine it with lunch, a hike or a trip onward to Gemiler Beach or Ölüdeniz.

Where it fits in

Kayaköy is perfect as a half-day trip from Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Hisarönü or Ovacık. It is close enough to visit without major planning, but different enough to feel like a separate experience.

The site also fits well into a journey along the Lycian coast. You can combine history, nature, small local restaurants and views on the same day without making the trip too demanding.

What to expect

The main experience is walking through the abandoned village. The old stone houses sit tightly across the hillside, and as you move higher, the views over the valley and surrounding mountains become better.

You can see remains of churches, stairs, walls, small rooms and old streets. Many buildings have no roofs or windows, but the structure of the village is still clear. It gives a strong sense of what the place may once have looked like.

Kayaköy is also a good place for photography. The light, stone walls, hillside and quiet mood make the village highly visual, especially early in the day or toward the afternoon.

Around the area there are small places to eat and a relaxed village setting. Many visitors choose breakfast or lunch in Kayaköy before or after exploring the ruins.

For active travellers, Kayaköy can be combined with a hike toward Afkule, Gemiler or in the direction of Ölüdeniz. If you do this, plan properly, wear good shoes and avoid the strongest heat.

Practical planning

• Allow at least 1 to 2 hours for the village itself
• Combine it with lunch in Kayaköy or a beach stop at Gemiler
• Use taxi, dolmuş, rental car or an organised tour from Fethiye or Ölüdeniz
• Visit early in the day or late afternoon during hot periods
• Wear good shoes with grip, not slippery sandals
• Bring water, a sun hat and sun protection
• Be careful inside old buildings and on loose stones
• Check your return transport before walking far into the area
• Plan extra time if you want to continue hiking
• Keep cash available for entrance, transport or small purchases

• Do not enter unstable buildings
• Avoid the middle of the day in summer
• Take time to walk a little higher in the village for better views
• Use your camera, but also read a little about the history before visiting
• Choose light clothes, but proper shoes
• Do not expect shade throughout the ruin area
• Combine the visit with Ölüdeniz if you want both history and beach
• Keep water available at all times
• Be calm and respectful, as the place has a heavy history
• Do not underestimate how hot the stones and paths can become

Good to know

Kayaköy is often called a ghost village, but it is first and foremost a historical place with a serious background. It should be experienced with respect, not only as a photo backdrop.

The ground can be uneven, and several paths go uphill. For small children, older visitors or people with poor balance, parts of the area may be demanding. You can still get a good impression without walking all the way to the top.

The site is close to popular holiday areas, but the mood is very different from the beach. Kayaköy offers a quieter and more reflective side of the Fethiye region.
