Ephesus is located near Selçuk in İzmir province and is one of the most famous ancient cities in Türkiye. In antiquity, it was an important trading city, harbour city and religious centre, and it became especially powerful during the Roman period.

The most famous sight in Ephesus is the Library of Celsus, with its impressive façade and central position along the old marble street. But the site is much more than one iconic building. You will also find a theatre, baths, temples, houses, public squares, monuments and remains of a city that was once among the most important in the region.

Ephesus is also important in Christian history. The city is linked to the apostle Paul, the apostle John and early Christian communities. Nearby you can also visit the Basilica of St. John and the House of the Virgin Mary.

A visit to Ephesus should not be rushed. The site is large, open and full of details. It is best to walk slowly, read a little along the way and let the ruins give you a sense of life in a great ancient city.

Where it fits in

Ephesus fits perfectly into a trip to İzmir, Selçuk, Kuşadası or western Türkiye. Many visitors come as a day trip from Kuşadası or İzmir, but Selçuk is often the most practical base if you want more time.

The visit can be combined with the Basilica of St. John, the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis and the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk. This gives you the ancient city, Christian history and local archaeological finds in one trip.

For travellers who enjoy history, Ephesus is one of the most important stops in Türkiye. It also combines well with other ancient sites such as Pergamon, Aphrodisias, Hierapolis and Priene if you are planning a historical route through the Aegean region.

What to expect

The Library of Celsus is the highlight for many visitors. Its façade is one of the most photographed in Türkiye and gives a strong impression of how wealthy and important the city was in Roman times.

The great theatre is another major stop. It stands dramatically near the old harbour road and once held many thousands of people. It gives a clear sense of the city’s scale and public life.

Along the marble streets, you can see remains of shops, fountains, columns, baths, temples and public buildings. It is easy to spend a long time simply walking through the site and noticing small details in stone, inscriptions and street layout.

The Terrace Houses are especially interesting if you want to see how wealthy residents lived. Mosaics, wall paintings and room layouts give a more personal picture of daily life in Ephesus.

Near the main site, you can also visit the Basilica of St. John, the Temple of Artemis and the House of the Virgin Mary. This makes Ephesus more than an ancient ruin; it is an area where several layers of history meet.

• Allow at least 2–3 hours for Ephesus itself
• Arrive early in the day to avoid heat and large groups
• Wear comfortable shoes, the site has stone, marble and uneven ground
• Bring water, especially in spring, summer and early autumn
• Use sunscreen, a hat or a cap, as there is little shade inside the site
• Check opening times before you go
• Consider a guide if you want to understand the history better
• Buy a separate ticket for the Terrace Houses if you want to see them
• Combine the visit with the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk
• Avoid visiting during the hottest hours of the day

Good to know

Ephesus is a very popular site and can become busy in high season, especially when large cruise groups arrive from Kuşadası. Early morning often gives the best experience.

The site is large and can be demanding in strong heat. There is little shade, and the marble stones can reflect a lot of sunlight. Water, sun protection and good shoes matter more than many visitors expect.

Ephesus is not just a collection of ruins. It is one of the best places in Türkiye to understand the transition between Greek, Roman, Byzantine and early Christian history.
