Aspendos is located in Antalya province, not far from Serik and Belek. The site is best known for its impressive Roman theatre, often described as one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the region.

The theatre was built during the Roman period and is known for its size, symmetry and strong acoustics. Even if you are not especially interested in history, the building is easy to understand and impressive to see in person.

Aspendos is a good choice if you want to add some history to a beach holiday. The visit does not need a full day on its own, but works perfectly as a half-day trip or combined with other nearby places.

The area around the theatre also has remains of an aqueduct, basilica, agora and other traces of the ancient city. The theatre is the main attraction, but the visit becomes better if you also take a short walk around the wider site.

Where it fits in

Aspendos fits well into a holiday in Antalya, Belek, Side, Manavgat or Alanya. It is one of the easiest historical excursions to add if you are staying at a hotel along the Mediterranean coast.

The site also works well together with Perge, Side old town, Kursunlu Waterfall or a short stop in Serik. For many travellers, Aspendos is just the right size: historical, easy to understand and simple to visit without a demanding day plan.

What to expect

The main experience is the large Roman theatre. You can enter the structure, see the seating rows, stage building and steep stands, and get a clear sense of how advanced Roman construction was.

The acoustics are an important part of the visit. Many visitors gently test the sound from the stage or seating areas, which makes it easier to understand why the theatre remains so famous.

Outside the theatre, you can see remains of the ancient city of Aspendos. This area is more open and less restored than the theatre itself, but it gives a stronger feeling that this was once a larger city, not just one building.

The aqueduct is also worth seeing if you have time. It shows how water supply and technical infrastructure were important parts of life in ancient cities.

Aspendos works well for both adults and children, as long as the visit is kept simple. You do not need a long explanation for the place to make an impression.

• Combine it with Perge, Side or Kursunlu Waterfall
• Use rental car, taxi or an organised tour from Antalya, Belek or Side
• Check opening hours before you go, especially outside peak season
• Bring water, sunglasses and sun protection
• Wear good shoes if you want to walk around the ruin area
• Visit early in the day during hot periods
• Keep cash available for small purchases or transport
• Read a little about the theatre before visiting to get more from the experience
• Plan a shorter stop if travelling with small children

• Avoid the hottest hours in midsummer
• Walk fully into the theatre before taking photos from outside
• Sit higher up in the stands for the best overview
• Do not only see the theatre, take a short walk outside too
• Wear shoes with good grip on stone steps
• Bring a sun hat or cap
• Check whether events are being held before your visit
• Do not expect shade across the whole site
• Combine with lunch in the area if travelling as a half-day trip
• Allow extra time if driving yourself and making several stops the same day

Good to know

Aspendos is mainly known for the theatre, and that is where most visitors spend the most time. The rest of the ruin area is less spectacular, but it gives the visit more historical context.

In summer, the stone, steps and open surfaces can become very hot. For families and older visitors, morning or late afternoon is often better than the middle of the day.

The site also works well for short visits. If you do not want a long historical tour, you can still have a strong experience in under two hours.
