Alanya Castle, or Alanya Kalesi, sits on the large rocky peninsula that separates Kleopatra Beach on the west side from the harbour area on the east side. The castle and walls are visible from much of Alanya and give the city its strong historic character.

The area has roots far back in history, but much of the castle atmosphere seen today is linked to the Seljuk period. The walls, towers, gates, ruins and views make this one of the most important cultural sites in Alanya.

The castle is not just one building, but a large area with walls, old houses, narrow roads, viewpoints, small cafés and historic remains. You can visit parts of it quickly, but the experience is best if you allow enough time.

For many travellers, the journey up to the castle is part of the visit. You can take the cable car from the Damlataş area, drive up, walk part of the route or combine transport with a relaxed walk.

Where it fits in

Alanya Castle fits naturally into almost any trip to Alanya. It is close to the centre, Kleopatra Beach, Damlataş Cave, the harbour and the Red Tower, and can easily be combined with several of the city’s best-known places.

If you only have one day in Alanya, the castle is one of the places you should prioritise. It gives you history, views and a better understanding of how the city is built around the peninsula.

The castle also works well as a calmer afternoon activity. Many visitors go up before sunset, walk around, take photos and finish with tea, coffee or dinner with a view.

What to expect

The first thing many people notice is the view. From the castle area, you can look down over Kleopatra Beach, the harbour, the blue Mediterranean, the Taurus Mountains and the city stretching along the coast.

You can walk along parts of the walls, see old gates, towers and ruins, and get a sense of how strategically important the peninsula once was. Some areas are well prepared for visitors, while others require better shoes and a little more care.

Inside the area, there are small houses, old stone walls, local cafés and quiet streets that feel very different from the beach promenade below. This mix of history and everyday life is part of what makes the place special.

You can also combine the castle visit with Kızıl Kule, the harbour, Damlataş Cave or the cable car. This gives a more complete experience of Alanya’s historic centre and coastal landscape.

• Allow at least 2–3 hours if you want to walk around calmly
• Take the cable car from Damlataş if you want easy access and good views
• Wear comfortable shoes, as the area has slopes, stairs and uneven stones
• Avoid the hottest hours of the day in summer
• Bring water, especially in June, July, August and September
• Check opening times and ticket rules for the paid sections
• Keep cash available for small cafés, transport or entrance fees
• Plan around sunset if you want good photos
• Combine the visit with Kleopatra Beach or Damlataş Cave if possible

Good to know

Alanya Castle is a large area, and not everything feels like a traditional museum. Some parts are ruins and historic zones, while other parts have homes, cafés and ordinary roads.

It can be steep and hot, especially in summer. If you travel with small children, elderly visitors or anyone with limited mobility, the cable car or a car may be better than walking all the way up.

The castle is one of the best places in Alanya to understand the city’s geography. Once you stand on the peninsula, it becomes clear how the beach, harbour, mountains and old town connect.
